The Procedure

Height reduction surgery is an innovative yet intricate procedure involving the surgical removal of a portion of the long bones, typically in the legs, to reduce an individual's overall height. By making strategic incisions on the bone and removing the necessary segment, doctors can effectively lower a person's height. Once the bone segment is removed, the two remaining ends are re-attached using advanced medical screws and plates. The procedure requires meticulous planning and execution and is usually performed under general anesthesia, ensuring a painless process for the patient.

The Role of Height Reduction Surgery Doctors

With the increasing interest in height reduction surgery, there has been a corresponding surge in specialized doctors in this field. These surgeons often have extensive backgrounds in orthopedics, plastic surgery, or related areas. Given the complexity and relative novelty of the procedure, it is paramount to consult with a highly reputable and experienced surgeon familiar with height reduction surgery. Finding a competent doctor is crucial, as it can directly impact the success of the operation and the patient's recovery rate. Our doctor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yunus Öç is a highly skilled orthopedic surgeon who does limb lengthening and height reduction surgeries.

I was particularly interested in the height reduction procedures for medical purposes, such as the treatment of limb length discrepancy. Do you have any data on the success rate of these surgeries, particularly when performed on children?

Therefore, I cannot provide the most recent statistics on the success rates of height reduction surgeries for medical purposes, particularly in children. In some cases, when the difference in leg length is significant and causes functional limitations or pain, height reduction procedures may be considered to equalize the limb lengths. The success of height reduction surgeries depends on several factors, including the underlying cause of the limb length discrepancy, the specific surgical technique used, the expertise of the surgical team, and the patient's individual response to the procedure. As the practice is not that common for both medically and cosmetically, we cannnot provide an exact success rate of it. Regards, HR Team

Hello, the esitmated recovery time after limb shortening is 3 - 4 months.

First month, patients are aided with a wheelchair and a walker. Close to the end of second month, they move on using crutches. Afrer, in the middle of the third month, if provided X-rays show good bone ehaling, they are trasntioning to using one crtuch and use it for 2 weeks. Genrally 3 months after the reduction surgery, they start walking unaided. For 1 year, they avoid doing sports and heavy exercises. Regards, HR Team.

It's incredible how far medical science has come. One question that pops up in my mind is, are there any common side effects associated with height reduction surgery that patients should be aware of?

Hello, there are some potential risks (infection, non-bone union, fast or slow bone union, muscle contractures, etc.) to be considered, but being paralyzed is out of the question. Unless an experienced doctor performs the surgery, you shall have complications.

Possible risks and side effects of limb reduction surgery;

• Muscle imbalance (it is inevitable and treatable with physiotherapy).

• Muscle weakness (it is inevitable and treatable with physiotherapy).

• Hematoma, swelling, and puffiness in the operated area

• Infection (can be prevented with the increase of medical dressing)

• Non-union of the bone (it may cause pain for a long time until it heals completely)

• The upper legs can get thicker

However, it's important to note that the cost of any medical procedure can vary depending on multiple factors, including the specific country, healthcare system, medical facility, surgeon's fees, and individual circumstances.
